The finished rooms

A family home beside the coastal forest at Sheffield Beach, renovated with structural changes and a new kitchen, then completed in every detail before the family moved in. Woven textures, African-inspired patterns and collected art give it a strong sense of place.

The project
A family home beside the coastal forest
After working on the owners' Johannesburg home several years earlier, Jonathan was asked to take on their new house, a beautiful forest retreat at Loxley Estate in Sheffield Beach. High ceilings and wide glass doors fill the rooms with light and open them up to the surrounding forest.
Jonathan oversaw the full renovation, from structural changes to a new kitchen and built-in cupboards in the bedrooms, while the owners remained in Johannesburg. They arrived in Ballito to a home that was complete in every detail.
What was done
Woven textures and earthy colours
The kitchen was rebuilt from scratch, the bare TV room wall became built-in shelving with cane-fronted cupboards, and new built-in cupboards went into the bedrooms.
The owners' love of Africa shaped the rest: a wall of woven baskets, African-inspired prints and collected art, set against earthy colours that echo the forest outside.
